Virgin America Appoints New VP of Marketing

Virgin America Airline Appoints New VP of Marketing

Virgin America, California-based airline told Event City that they have appointed Luanne Calvert as its vice president of marketing.

Luanne Calvert New VP Marketing for Virgin America

Luanne Calvert New VP Marketing For Virgin America

Calvert will take the place of Porter Gale who left Virgin earlier in 2011 to pursue other opportunities.

Calvert will lead the airline’s Brand and Online Marketing, In-flight Content and Loyalty teams.

She will play a leading role in developing the Virgin America brand as the airline continues to grow into new markets across North America.

Calvert comes to Virgin America with an impressive array of successful companies as a leading digital marketing strategist and online consultant with Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy’s (LVMH) Fendi and Moleskine brands in Italy as well as Calvin Klein Cosmetics, Netflix and Ebay. Calvert served as creative director at Google, where she managed the brand globally and developed campaigns to bring Google products directly to consumer and business audiences — including Google Checkout, Google Apps, iGoogle and Google Maps.

Virgin America, known for its use of social media and edgy marketing campaigns, has been successful at conveying the idea that the company provides an entertaining and comfortable way to travel.

Calvert said her approach to marketing and advertising steers away from use of traditional vehicles like TV and billboard advertising. She prefers using other avenues – like social media or events – to draw in customers.

The airline, based in Burlingame, flies to 14 cities, increasing to 16 by the end of the year. The company said sales grew to $724 million last year, a 32 percent improvement over 2009.

Virgin America is planning the first major renovation of its in-flight offerings. The move holds big implications for the airline, which has attracted a strong following among travelers who say they are drawn to amenities like power plugs at every seat, a wide array of video games and even techno music in the bathrooms.

Travelers won’t see the changes until 2012, executives said. We wish Ms. Calvert the best of success for her and Virgin America in the coming years!

Best of CES 2011

The Consumer Electronic Show came and went like a cool breeze on a warm summer’s night. Here was the Event City Creative Magazine, at one of the largest electronic shows in the world with only 72 hours to see over 80,000 products – Yeah Right!! As my 10 year old and his friends would say, EPIC FAIL!! I’ve always maintained this should be a week long show, what better reason to stay in Las Vegas for a few extra days.

So what did we find at this ultimate Electronic Industry’s playground?

iGrill, first ever Bluetooth enabled grilling/cooking thermometer and App

I’ve recently had the chance to speak with some of my Catering friends, food people at the Fancy Food Show in San Francisco (what a great partner this product would make with some of those awesome BBQ Sauces we sampled), and lots of Grilling fanatics about a new device, and they all asked the same questions – What is it? What does it do?

Here’s the overall idea: iGrill is an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch-friendly cooking and grilling thermometer that runs off of 4 AA batteries and provides a  temperature readout in digital format on its own screen. It does not need an electronic device to use. It uses a long-range (200-foot) transmitter using Bluetooth technology to communicate with a free iGrill application. Ok, that’s pretty simple, right? Good. Are you sitting down? Here it where it goes way beyond the “out of the box” of any typical digital cooking thermometer. The iGrill offers both digital and analog readouts, a timer, guidelines for cooking different types of meat that can show you the progress for whatever you’re cooking, and even integrated recipes. iGrill also has the ability to optionally connect with two metal probes — one’s included in the package — and works at temperatures of up to 400 degrees. White or black versions are available, they come with a built-in stand, a wrap-around thermometer cable, and a nice glow-through front face.

Sure you have to ask yourself the question is it certainly worth the $100 you’ll spend for this functionality? Well that is entirely up to you, but we are certainly intrigued enough (and we hope you are too) that we’ll be looking forward to doing our review on this newest gadget for the fine professional food service company, to the grilling enthusiast. Of course I will most certainly look forward to anticipating the outcome of our grilling experience. Gotta run, I have some decisions to make- Chicken, T-bones, Mahi Mahi, oh my….

Eye-Fi Memory Card Does Work For You

The Eye-Fi card is the 1st wireless memory card. It looks, stores media, and fits into cameras just like a regular SDHC card. But this card is special. The Eye-Fi card has built-in Wi-Fi that uses your existing wireless network to effortlessly transfer photos and videos to wherever you desire.

This is not the first time Event City Magazine seen this, and it certainly will not be the last. A very promising device, we are looking forward to doing a thorough review on this unit and all of the features it has to offer.

Visit the Eye-Fi Website for the latest information on this product.

Everyday theft of some type of electronic mobile device is not an uncommon occurrence, especially with the rising prevalence of expensive gadgets in the general populace. Not to mention all the information we store on our smartphones and laptops these days, including confidential business and personal documents, company e-mail, personal finance apps, so much private information its even more important to protect your device from loathsome characters.

Ladies and gentlemen let me introduce you to my new best friend, GadgetTrak Mobile Security, which is now launching in version 3 just in time for CES 2011. Along with its companion apps, this handy service provides comprehensive protection for laptops, smartphones, and tablets in the event they’re lost or stolen.

GadgetTrak consists of five major features to help you protect your data and find your device. For one, you can remotely wipe any personal data, including photo, e-mail, contacts, and texts. You can also back up any of this data using government-grade encryption, which is a nice feature for those who don’t want to lose all the data in a wipe. The software is also tamper proof, so once it has been activated, no settings can be changed; the service will even notify you if the thief removes the SIM card.

GadgetTrak uses a combination of GPS, Wi-Fi positioning, and cell tower positioning to help you find your missing device. There’s an alarm functionality, which lets you trigger a loud siren, which can serve as a theft deterrent or a location aid, even if the phone is set to silent.

GadgetTrak Mobile Security 3 is available for $34.95 per year for laptops and non-iOS smartphones and tablets. A one-time 99-cent download from iTunes is all it takes for iOS users to enjoy the service. In my humble iPinion, that is certainly a small price to pay for your peace of mind.

San Francisco’s Clift Hotel – New & Improved!

To say the newly renovated CLIFT HOTEL in San Francisco has an edge would be putting it mildly.  An inspired fusion of old-world hotel elegance with distinctly contemporary energy and glamour, the nearly century-old Clift’s modern and daring sense of diversity perfectly captures the city’s spirit. Event City’s stop at the Clift was unfortunately a short one as we collect mounds of information on Hotels and Venues throughout the USA prior to our Live Launch.

The Clift, which is practically a stones throw from Union Square shopping and the legendary Nob Hill, Clift is perfectly located for sightseeing, shopping and socializing in the beautiful City by the Bay! Clift’s classic stone exterior opens onto a glowing purple entryway that prepares guests for the wonderland within. Designed by Philippe Starck, the soaring lobby contains one of the most eclectic furniture collections in all of California, with chairs from Ray and Charles Eames, a coffee table by Salvador Dali, a surreal stool by Renee Marguerite, and a sculpture custom made by William Sawaya. The centerpiece is a thirty-five-foot fireplace with a Bronze chimney sculpture by Gerard Garouste. The thrilling monumental scale and fantastical furnishings create a dream-like composition that is the cornerstone of Clift’s magic. Even prior to the Clift’s renovation, back in the day, it was the primary property for Rock’n'Roll stars to settle their gear and “chill out” while performing at one of the fine venues in the San Francisco area.

Let us know if you have stayed at the Clift and what you think about it by responding to this post. As always, we look forward to hearing from you.

Design Your Own – Unbelieveable Web Design Tools

sg2logo yolalogo_tagline

How long have we waited for the ability to take our web design ideas and just sit down and build? Yes, you. Take your photos, drawings, artwork, text, any form of media we might want to add to some type of a Internet presence and begin to build it. Imagine a website created by your 9 year old son or daughter, pretty cool just to let them have a go at building a web presence for you, right? Whether it be a birthday party for your Spouse, or a website for a small business or even just to have some fun with family and friends.

Recently my son began to build his own website. He’s only nine. Yeah he rides his bike, plays soccer and goes Wirling as often as he can, but he LOVES to work on his website too. He uses an online tool for building a pretty robust, graphic filled, creative, energetic, and all around FUN website. No special skills except taking a little time to learn the ins and outs of that new online tool (sorry my Little Man for revealing your secrets, but your Website is looking really sharp anyway). So how does one learn to Design their own website? I’ll reveal this and much more, in a series of articles, as I review a number of different solutions such as software products, websites, online tools and more that will help you do just that. Design your own web presence.

So how would you like to save money, in some cases lots of it, and be able to build a pretty cool website at the same time? No, that’s not a trick question, just reality in the 21st century, and the direction technology has allowed us to travel.

It’s been such a long time since building your own website lived in the realm of black-framed, eyeglass-wearing, palm-pilot-toting, geeky graphic designers in the alleys of SOHO or pencil-necked gearheads who lived, ate, and dreamed about code in a place called Silicon Valley. Well all of that is now changed.

There are a number of different companies that offer solutions, some of them very simple and easy to use, solutions for building a very nice, super clean, PROFESSIONAL web presence. Over the course of the next couple of months I will talk about them and reveal how you can build your own, with very little or practically no skills. For most of these solutions having the knowledge of how to use Microsoft Word is about all you will need to accommplish some magical feats of web design. Some might be slightly more advanced, but then with the addition of some great “Templates” you’re once again off and running. Yep, the software does all of the coding, extra design elements and so much more.

So let’s begin with a couple of very unique, and also very different programs; you might consider them bookends in the world of “Design-Your-Own-Web”, but ultimately each one of these great products, keeps it real and allows you to create wonderful websites.

SiteGrinder2 and Yola. Sound like some characters from a Star Wars movie? No, just some pretty cool tools to help you be more creative and save you lots of money.

Yola brings website building to the rest of us. Small businesses, groups and organizations, Non-profits, even your Aunt Jenny. How about the gal sitting next to you on the subway, or the dude in the cubicle next to you. Everyone. The Yola website builder lets you easily take what’s in your head and turn it into webpages in front of your eyes. Yola lets you make great-looking sites with webages that work beautifully together.

The magic of all this is the company does this without any imposing banner ads or plastering pop-up ad windows everywhere. They fundamentally believe that the user of their product should be able to build and host their websites without paying for a designer, a suite of software or a hosting company. With Yola, you have absolutely everything you need to get your site up and running. If you want even more, they offer premium features too. The company is also there to provide you with a helping hand, so you’ll never feel like you’re stuck. They work very hard so you don’t have to. They believe they have truly created a “no-brainer” solution for everyone to build outstanding websites. We’ll let you know as we review this product in the coming weeks. So in a nutshell that’s who Yola is.

Sitegrinder 2 turns Adobe Photoshop into an easy-to-use and powerful website design and production tool. It’s true! In fact, a SiteGrinder 2-equipped designer with no HTML programming expertise needs only some basic Photoshop skills to go from design concept to full deployment of a professional, standards-compliant website in just minutes with no programming whatsoever … and they do it all from within Photoshop.

SiteGrinder 2 takes care of everything, even ensuring cross-platform browser compatibility. Best of all, pages created with SiteGrinder 2 retain the exact look and layout of the parent Photoshop file from which they were created. Pretty amazing huh?!

I specifically chose Yola and SiteGrinder to begin this series of articles because they are very different- one takes absolutely NO skills and the other you need the skill of a specific software. One is online and used via the web. The other is a software tool, a Plug-in that is used off-line and you build the webpages within that software program.

As easy as either one of these might seem to you, everything else I introduce to you over the next couple of months will either be almost as simple as Yola, and may not be as diverse as SiteGrinder2, but rest assured all of these tools will allow you to build your own website fairly easily and with very little cost!.

Until then, do not hesitate to send us your feedback and comments on what you might want us to review in the future.
